This is not a 2020 reflection piece. I am not a self-important news anchor that thinks they are providing a valuable service or a search engine that actually believes they need to advertise despite pretty much owning the earth.
I do not need to be reminded of 2020. I was there. It sucked.
This post is about a business I started. It is called “TC Creative” and it is a freelance copywriting business with one employee, me, and one partner, also me.
The title of this post is not an error. I thought I screwed up when I registered the business name by putting “LLC” actually in the name, thus making the company “TC Creative, LLC, LLC.” While that does add even MORE limited liability, I shuddered at the prospect of explaining to clients why they had to write it twice on checks.
It turns out that I did not make a mistake and the name of the business is in fact “TC Creative, LLC.” Below I will talk about how the business came about, what a copywriter actually does, and the type of things that I can produce if you hire me.
How to Achieve Success on Upwork
I have learned as a copywriter how important subheadings like the one above are to “SEO” or search engine optimization. I always wondered why a company like Stanley Home Products (I write some of their blogs) even bothers to have a blog on their website. I learned that the only reason is to drive traffic from Google.
Basically, how you begin a business on Upwork is you open a profile. The profile will have zero reviews or evidence that you can actually perform the job that you claim you can. So, you have to accept work for little money just to get some reviews. The first job I did on Upwork was 1500 words for $16. This is the same amount of money pulp fiction writers earned a hundred years ago. But, it was all for the reviews, man.
Once you get a few good reviews, then you can win jobs that pay a little better. And a little better. And finally you can start making a living.
I think the best advice I can give anyone starting out on Upwork is to have patience. I made more money there in the last two months than I did in the first six. It is just how things have to play.

I have been lucky enough to write a variety of webpages for many different companies over the last few months. The Dunham Foundation, a non-profit that awards millions of dollars to charities in the Aurora, IL area, hired me to write the Bio of their founder, John C. Dunham.
3. Entire Websites
American Classic Homes builds 4,000 square-foot homes in Seattle and the surrounding areas. They hired me to rewrite every page of their old website and to add new content. They launched the website I wrote for them early this year.
This past year has made me appreciate every gig. I am also very thankful for the people who believed that I could do this job long before I believed in myself.
